Gypsy Mary Bio
Welcome to the Gypsy Gewels website.
We purchased a home in Deming,NM and are still RV-ing as time permits.
In the middle of preparing for the trip to Tucson, I decided to try the Kumi Japanese Braiding Disk. Wow! Fast and simple. Once you get the hang of it. I know what I will be doing for the next few weeks.=)
I was recently ask" how I got started beading?" Ahh the Beginning of Beading?
I was thinking of the Crochet Ropes from the 1960'S, made with Pearls from Ben Franklin 5 & 10 cent Stores.
Little Pearls were added to homemade beads. The day old bread was seperated from the crust and mixed with diluted Elmers School glue. Shaped into variety of sizes and strung onto fishing line to dry. Beading Thread was nothing more than "Button Thread" . A bit of clear nail polish transformed the "Ends of the thread" to a stiff needle replacement to string the beads onto the thread. Let the Crocheting begin.Sealing all hand made beads with clear nail polish seemed like a good idea back them.
Color, who needed colors,? there was white bread and whole wheat. Black and Brown shoe polish and Ox blood. Of course there were the Blueberrie juice, Raspberries and Cherry juice. These all blended well with the white pearls.
I Tatted and Crocheted ropes of all sizes.Amazingly they always sold.(for very little, If my memory serves me=)
In 1970, while I was a Volunteer in Service to America, One of the first Low Income Community Volunteers In the USA, I was introduced to "PaperBeads". I promptly introduced them to our "Community Center Groups". Cutting a variety of different size strips of triangles from the color pages of magazines was an activity all the children quickly learned and loved. What kid don't like cutting up paper, and playing with a flour and water paste to glue them into little beads. They would then string them on yarn and wear them with great pride.
I never thought of all the sequins and beads I sewed onto wedding dresses and Veils as beading. Sequins and beads on Shawls of Hairpin Lace. Guess today that would be called "Beaded Embroidery".
I took my first beading class on Oct 29, 2006. I made a peyote and fire polish bracelet. I was hooked. Later that year, I took a couple of classes on Brick stitch. One Right Angle Weave.
Learning New Beading Stitches has me on a Journey to learn it all. Maybe Wire Wrapping, and maybe some Clay beads, Kumi and the list is endless.
Not until 2008 did I start teaching beading at a Local Bead Store. I only taught “Beginning Classes”. I love teaching others the basic beading techniques, as I learn them.
I still love making Beaded Flowers and Counted Cross Stitch and Crochet, and Tatting, and All Things that include Beads.
“The Gypsy Gewels Caravan Parties” will provide Classes, Kits and Sales for those interested as I travel. I am planning to add “Free Tutorials” in time.
This website was created as the results of a Beading Daily discussion on Home Beading Parties.
Someone recommended “Gypsy Gewels” would be a good name for my home parties. Since I was living in an RV and traveling.
Thanks, for stopping by or joining.
